Opinions Of A Housewife - Seasonal Spending

For those of you who don't follow me on twitter, I've recently been working my butt off as a Christmas temp at a large chain supermarket/grocery store.
And goodness has it opened my eyes!

All too often I hear people slandering our current government and cursing the economic state that our country is in, 'I'm skint' 'We have no money.' ...
Well how on earth can you justify spending over a week and a half's wages solely on alcohol?! Or how about wasting £300+ on party food and 'nibbles' that are blatantly going to go to waste when you only have to feed a family of 4. Buying enough sweets, chocolate and candy to last the average child a year can't make sense. Nah, something isn't right.

This time of year turns everyone into crazy people, who bulk buy and stock their fridges and freezers to capacity even though they'll back to the shops by boxing day.
I really don't understand the hype over one day.

Charity Spotlight V.4

Around 230,000 elderly people are spending this holiday season alone.
Imagine being completely alone on Christmas day. Missing lost loved ones and unable to leave the house due to weather conditions.
Well research has shown that not only is loneliness a state of mind but has serious health effects too, posing similar effects to that of smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Now of course there are people suffering loneliness everyday of the year, but when the holiday's are a time meant for spending time with family it can hit people hard. A TV shouldn't have to be peoples form of company.

That's where you come in.

Inked & Awesome - Lara Warner

Name: Lara Warner.
Age: I'm 20.

How old were you when you got your first tattoo and what was it?

I was 18 when i got my first Tattoo. I remember the exact date too; 21st August 2010 because it was 5 days after I had my daughter. I got her date of birth in Roman Numerals on the side of my wrist, I wasn't to pleased with it as the artist that did it was apprenticing and one of the characters is wonky. (I later added her name to it.)

I Wish, List V.8 Photographer Edition

Camera Lens Mug I don't drink hot drinks but I think making Jake's cup of tea would be a little more entertaining if it were made in this.

Magnetic Polarframes I Love these cute magnetic photo frames shaped like Polaroid pictures!

Photo-opoly Board Game I'm a Photographer and a Monopoly player. Need I say more?

Cuteness Overload V.5

We all know a dog is for life, not just for Christmas and I'm sure these recipients of puppy presents will live up to that. So sweet.

17 and a very cringe worthy British bulldog which is now covered up.

It's My Life - Seasonal Decor

This year I tried a little harder to make the flat a bit more festive. We already had our tree, but have had to put it on a table this year to protect it from tiny little teeth! Other than that I have crafted a few homemade bits and pieces to snazz up the place.
Here are some photos.

J.D Photography - Family Portraits

The time has come again when I have to nag at Jake and bend his arm to get in front of the lens so I can have an up to date family portrait for our photo wall.

We are so lucky that we are both photographers and have our own portable studio meaning we can take professional photos as and when we like, in the comfort of our own home. It's a good thing too because I'm sure no studio (apart from mine when I eventually open one) would allow a 15 week old puppy and two house rabbits in front of the backdrop!

My Soundtrack V.5 Holiday Special!

I am not in the slightest religious. I don't know exactly what I am but I know that I do not believe in 'God' or anything in the Bible. (Which I have read and heard much from as I attended a Catholic Primary School).
This may be very controversial to say as I know there is a huge Christian blogging community, but it is the whole meaning behind Christmas after all so I felt the need to explain my reason for celebrating this time of year as being just an extension of thankfulness for the people I am close to.

That all being said, this 'Soundtrack' post is of the Carols and songs I enjoy the most that do not contain any mention of religion.

My all time favorite being...

This for the nostalgia...

I'm not a huge fan of this song and the lyrics, but Jimmy Eat World are one of my favorite bands and did an awesome cover of it.

Had to sneak a Disney-ish one in there!

What are your favorite seasonal songs??

Inked & Awesome - Lottie L'Amour

Name: Lottie L'Amour
Age: 25
How old were you when you got your first tattoo and what was it?
I was naughty and had my first tattoo with my best friend on a whim at the tender age of 15. I went to a tattoo artist that we knew didn't really check for I.D. - so I won't name them! We got a Chinese symbol for our birth year (Tiger) on our stomachs, because we thought it would hurt less. It was a terrible mistake, but set me up for a life of knowing what I want and thinking it through before I did it. I learn from mistakes!

My Top 5 - Christmas Movies

So the holiday season has inevitably arrived and that means curling up on the sofa, PJs on, with a box of chocolates and lots of movies!
I for one am terrible at making the decision of what to watch even though we have a large DVD collection and access to almost any movie we can imagine with the internet. That's were Google comes in. With my usual search phrase being along the lines of  'Top Disney Movies' or 'Best movies of the 90's' I gathered a best Christmas movie list would helpful to people with a problem similar to mine.
So here, in no particular order, are my personal 'Top 5' favorite Christmas Movies.

The Santa Clause [1994]
I might go as far to say that this is actually my all time favorite and as with all films that have sequels the first is always the best!

Opinions Of A Housewife - Stupid Trends 2012

I was going to write this as a 'My Top 5' post, but I realized there were maybe a few more than five or at least a big rant that would be more fitting as an Opinions post.
As vague as the title is, this is simply a list of recent trends and fashions that just make me think...why?!

Cuteness Overload V.4

The last two versions of this series have been a slight cop out and bragging session from yours truly so this time I did some searching around to find some more cute and heartwarming animal stories!

I have always been amazed by guide dogs, how they manage to do such an important job, providing those who lack the ability to see for themselves with some freedom in life. I bet you've never heard of a dog with a guide dog though!

It's My Life - I'm Thankful For...

With the American Holiday of Thanksgiving having just passed on the 22nd I thought I'd share a quick list of things that I am thankful for.

First off and most important of all is my little family. I mention them quite alot but as someone who only has one or two real friends my parents, Nana and partner are my world. Jake has turned my world around and makes me laugh everyday without fail. My Mam and Dad have gone above and beyond the normal parent duties and supported both Jake and I so much since moving into our flat while we searched for work and my Nana is such an amazing lady. She has done so well since losing my Granda and has always been the actual nicest person ever, I'm proud to be her Granddaughter.

21.12.12 - The End Of The World

12.21.12 as the Americans write it,  is the date of the anticipated 'End of the world'.

Or simply an overreaction amongst the lesser informed of the actual events of that date.
The fact is that the 21st of December 2012 is the last day in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, most commonly known as the Mayan calender and is being taken out of context as the predicted last day of the Earth by ancient Mayan elders. Although as with all calenders a new one begins. It just so happens that their calender lasts 5,125 years...

Alot of the hype behind this date links mainly to the superstitions and linking of coincidences by the

eschatologists of different beliefs and religions.

The NASA website describes the phenomenon best stating that, 'The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012 and linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.'

The lack of information for people has lead to many people looking at movies like '2012' and 'The Day After Tomorrow' and being frightened. Just speaking to my mother on the phone last week, I scared her with my apocalypse talks to the point she said 'I don't want to live through that'!

Many scientists assure us that planet Earth has been fine for the last 4 billion years and there are no threats to worry about. Planetary alignments pose no notable problems and there are none to come in the next few decades anyways. As well as this, the claims related to 'Nibiru' have been shunned as internet hoaxes and those of a polar shift have been classed as impossible.

However, alot of people believe what they want and expect they're own ideas of events. Personally, I think it will perhaps mark a new age, like the Ice age for example. More than likely involving alot of water though. I'm just taking my thoughts from current events the past year or two have dealt us. There has been numerous tsunami's and many floods causing terrible devastation, gotta be more than a coincidence eh?
Whatever happens this time next month, I'm sure we are all safe and there is nothing too major to worry about - if anything at all.
I hope you can all swim though! haha

To read more from believers click here and more rationalizations from NASA here.

My Soundtrack V.4

One of my favorite bands from my early teens, No Doubt, have released a new album!
Unfortunately my first listen through was pretty underwhelming so I decided to hunt out the old classics and have been enjoying my old favorites this past week.
I'm hoping the new album, Push and Shove, will be a grower.

Are you a No Doubt fan? What do you think of their new release?

I was 18 and I'd wanted tattoos for a long time so for my 18th birthday I got a small one on my stomach because I was too scared to get anything bigger but since then I've had 4 more tattoos and they keep getting bigger and bigger each time I get one done.

My Top 5 - Skincare and Beauty Items

Maybe be you weren't aware from the vast amounts of Disney or cute animal pictures on this blog, but I am in fact a girl! Shock horror!
I myself actually brought up the subject over at bloggers the other day that I haven't been able to find many other female bloggers that don't just blog about fashion and make up. Now, I have nothing against beauty bloggers, but I'm really not interested in just reading reviews of products and looking at countless 'OOTD's. That being said - there are obviously many people who do enjoy that type of thing. So I thought I'd include my favorite girly items as a Top 5 post. Enjoy.

Lush - Tea Tree Toner Tab
I love tea tree! Known for its antibacterial qualities its perfect for my problematic skin. I've been a long time user of tea tree oil and the like but I tried these toner tabs for the first time last year and used one before a weekly fresh face mask (also from Lush!). It not only made my skin soft to the touch but it felt super clean and fresh.
To be honest I am a big fan of most Lush products. The fact that everything is fresh, handmade and no ingredients are tested on animals alongside the high quality of everything makes them my favorite brand.

Opinions of a Housewife - I'm British But...

A light bulb appeared above my head right now whilst looking through other British blogs.
Alot of them seem to live up to the 'Stereotypes' that Americans seem to label us Brits with, so I want to stand out a prove we are not all that you think we are!

So here it goes.
I'm British but...

Food and Drink
It is an extremely well known stereotype that we all drink vasts amount of tea. Unfortunately, that is true in that case of my other half but as for me - I hate it!
Also, although this refers more to Ireland, the Brits are usually portrayed by the Americans as big drinkers..especially of beer. Another thing I don't like.
Traditional meals associated with the United Kingdom are things like a roast beef 'Sunday Lunch', fish and chips and Crumpets. Again, I eat none of the above.

I am very happy to be writing this post as it means I have actually stuck with this new blogging venture.

I do put a lot of time and effort as well as research and planning into the content you'll see and read here.

What's Going On? - All Hallows Eve

Most commonly known as 'Halloween' the yearly autumn holiday has long lost its tradition and instead been replaced by women prancing around scantily clad and children wearing 'scream' masks begging for money and sweets at strangers doors.

The origins of Halloween span some 2,000 years back to the time of the Celts of the UK, Ireland and France. November 1st was what they celebrated as their New Year after the summer and harvests and the beginning of the winter. This time of year was associated with the most human deaths, most probably because of the cold dark days and nights.
The night before,October 31st, was thought to be the night where the worlds of the living and the dead became closer. The Celt's thought that this made it easier for the Druids (their priests) to make predictions about the future which provided comfort during the winter months.
Alongside this, they believed that the spirits of the dead visited earth destroying their crops and causing disruption. This is where the tradition of costume wearing started. To celebrate the Samhain holiday people would dress in animal skins and heads and light bonfires to ward off the 'ghosts'.
[Read More about how Halloween spread to America...and more.]

Now the autumn holiday has become a cheap and tacky celebration of nothing-in-particular. Ask any child what Halloween is about and the first answer would most likely be 'Candy'.
Although the wearing of costumes dates back to the early days,  I'm pretty sure they didn't dress us as a 'sexy' nurse or sexualized Disney princess' - that wouldn't be very intimidating.

I've never been the type to celebrate Halloween (as in go to parties or trick or treat) and I suppose it isn't as big a deal here in the UK as it is in America, but I think that people should know of and remember the origins of the holiday they are 'celebrating' (or should I say, using as another excuse to get drunk!).
Next year I hope to step it up a notch and decorate all autumn like even more but this year we neither had the time or the money to go all out :( I hope you took the time to honor the deceased.
I spent yesterday remembering my lost loved ones, family, friends and pets. Oh, and of course watching my favorite TV show from when I was younger. This episode definitely expresses the real meaning of Halloween!

It's My Life - Flat-iversary!

Another milestone!
Two in the space of two months, yep. Today marks the anniversary of when we first moved into our flat.

I don't even want to think about how horrible our situations were before we decided to take the plunge and move in together. We are so lucky to have such a brilliant relationship as best friends as well as partners and I am very thankful that Jake is the person I'm sharing this '1st home' experience with.

Anyways, it may of been a full year we have lived here but its only recently that the place has actually started to take shape and look like a home.
I thought I'd share a few photos as a kind of 'Home Tour'...

My Top 5 - Childhood Toys

As a child born in 1990, I regard myself a true '90's kid'. There always seems to be a big buzz online of 90's vintage and nostalgia so I thought I would list my Top 5 Childhood Toys!
Obviously there was alot to choose from with that decade giving birth to some very popular crazes such as Tamagotchi's, Pog's, Pokemon and more. I had all of these but below is my list of things I played with the most!

I had lots of Puppy in my pocket toys as well as the 'Animal Hospital' version of the toys too. Remember those?

J.D Photography - The Wedding of the Year!

As promised, here is a short post of some sneaky peaks from Mr and Mrs B's (aka Grace's Mammy and Daddy)'s Wedding day.

I'd been anticipating this day, probably almost as much as the Bride and Groom!
The whole day was fabulous from my drive up through the beautiful countryside in the early AM, fun getting ready in the Bridal suite and the ceremony where the sun shone in through the conservatory.

Opinions Of A Housewife - Tattoos and Discrimination

Although I don't have that many tattoos (yet) they are on display pretty much all of the time. Today I want to discuss the stereotyping and discrimination that tattooed people face.
The way I see things is that, although being tattooed is becoming more and more common, people are aware when they decide to become heavily tattooed that there is still a percentage of people that will stereotype you, especially within the workplace.

I thankfully have worked mainly in environments where tattoos aren't a problem, but I have also worked in one major high street fashion store where my appearance caused that job to terminate. Without naming and shaming the chain store I was pretty much told that I wasn't 'wow' enough and 'looked a mess' compared to when I was first hired and coincidentally had my tattoo's covered. I had to spend a large amount of the wages I earned buying the new trends that arrived each week, I tried to work around this rule by wearing plain black leggings as a staple part of my working outfits but was put under alot of pressure to 'dress up' more. It really wasn't me and I felt completely alienated among the other girls so therefore made the decision to leave. Agreed, it wasn't purely because of my tattooes, but my whole sense of style ( or lack of according to them).

As a photographer alot of the trade I have had so far is from friends, family, family friends and people they know. Most of my shoots are in the family's home or out on location and so far I haven't had any complains if a tattoo has been on show. However for the wedding I photographed recently I went to lengths to find an appropriate outfit that I found was respectful to all concerned. Especially when I have an old school gypsy head with a slit throat on my wrist that doesn't really send the right message about me.

Tattoos are a big part of any art collector and each piece should mean something special to you, which mine all do, but you cannot assume that others will understand from one look and not judge. I have had instances where the only empty seat on a full bus is next to me and people would rather stand after eyeing my appearance. My partner has  had similar encounters when he had his ears stretched (they were quite huge) although this is another thing that seems to of become a trend.
Overall, the world is becoming more and more tolerant to all types of body modification. As someone who was bullied in school for having brightly coloured hair, piercings, to like skulls and wear skate shoes I see alot of those who made fun of me following the current fashion trends and looking how I did in school! It's more rare to see someone without any tattoos than someone with these days although being heavily tattooed is still for those most dedicated to the art instead of fashion.

Think before you ink!

Out and About - Seaton Deleval Hall

It's only taken us a year, but we finally visited the Grade 1 listed country house that is so close to our home.
The Hall and grounds are, obviously, located in Seaton Deleval, Northumberland just minutes away from us in the car so last Saturday we ventured along for a little day out.

MMA Madness - UFC in the UK

I'm gonna start of by saying that I haven't watched any MMA events what so ever in the past 6 months or more. This makes me really sad :( It's been the only other hobby of mine, aside from photography, for 7/8 years now but we cannot afford ESPN to watch the UFC (and I have a strong dislike to Bamma, absolutely chuffed that Tom Watson lost his debut the other night, as nasty as that is I always said he wasn't UFC standard!) so I've tried to shy away from the scene rather than frustrate myself that I'm missing out.

Now the time had rolled around that UFC were back in the UK for UFC on Fuel TV: Struve vs. Miocic (last weekend) of course we missed that too. Last year at the same time Jake and I had press passes to be octagon side and photograph/ provide live play by play for an American website at UFC 138: Leben vs. Munoz, which was so amazingly exciting! But you guessed it, the trip fell through. We moved into our flat a week or so before we needed to be in Birmingham which wasn't possible - of course we chose a home over the opportunity.

BUT instead of being down in the dumps about it all I want to post my photos from my time at the only UK UFC Fan Expo in London 2010 and the UFC 120 event I attended. My first and only ever event so far but hopefully there will be many more.
I've had views directed here from my photos on other sites so I'd like to make a post where they are all in one place.

Looking back, I could of done alot better when taking photos...but it was so fast paced and so much to look at. Next time I'll do better. I can't wait to share the experience and atmosphere of a live event with the love of my life.

My Top 5 - Girl Crushes

Here is a list of my top five celebrity women that inspire me.

I first fell in love with Megan when watching Transformers. Probably like most men. Then I spotted she has been in a couple of the movies I'd watched when I was young such as, Holiday in the Sun with the Olsen twins. I don't really know what first drew me to her, she just has something about her that lures you in, an amazingly sexy yet ladylike demeanor ..its quite creepy now I think about it. haha But yeah, she is beautiful, is great in 'Jennifer's Body' and I like how private she keeps her home life - proving it is possible.

Now a mammy, its seems a long time since I first started listening to Pink's music. 11 years later, after her Missundaztood album was released I am still a fan of her music but more so the work she does for animal rights. Campaigner for PETA and writing letters to the British Royal family about fox hunting and the use of animal fur, she is also involved with 9 or so other charities. Her tattoos are pretty dope too.

It should be completely obvious why 'Wor Chezza' is on this list. Not only is she the most stunning looking lady on the earth, she is also from the same street as some of my family! I know alot of people up here don't actually like her, but it must be complete jealousy as personally I look up to someone who has gone so far and done so well with her life and came from Newcastle. Geordie pride <3

Maybe a little controversial to have on a list of inspirational people but look at Ms Marsh as of late! What an extraordinary athlete she has turned into. I have forgotten any outrageous behavior from the beauty's past and am astounded by how well she has done and is doing in the body building world. I 100% back all of her work against bullying too, after the bad times I had/get.

Jenna is the most recent addition to this list as I only discovered her a few months back. For those who don't know, Jenna is a YouTube sensation and absolutely hilarious. I love her to the point, completely real, doesn't give a sh*t attitude and relate to her relationship with her pets, Mr Marbles and Kermit. She too is gorgeous and even rocks being dressed as a dude.
