Inked & Awesome - Beginners Edition.

Name: Sophie Eloise May
Age: 21

How old were you when you got your first tattoo and what was it?
19, swallow on my wrist.

What is your employment status/occupation and do your tattoos effect it?
Unemployed, but they have never affected me in my past jobs.

What is your favorite piece? What is the story behind it?
Favourite is my foot piece; it is a compass with SW & NE on it. Represents my move from when I was 17 from Jersey to Newcastle.

Do you have a favourite artist who you go back to or do you collect different artists work? Why?
I have only 2 tattoos, both got done at different studios and by different artists. Normally just go to artists that I hear are good from word of mouth or where people I know have got them done.

Have you faced any specific discrimination due to being tattooed?
I don’t think I ever have, mostly get compliments of people. Only complaints off my mam who doesn't like tattoos.

Do you plan on getting many more tattoos? If so will you stick to small/hidden pieces? Why?
Yeah! I got loads more ideas, it's just the money for them that's the problem. At the moment the ones I like will go on my arms, thigh, back and ribs. Just can't decide which one will go where yet! They won't be massive but will be bigger than the ones I have now.

Name: Charlotte Ross
Age: 22

How old were you when you got your first tattoo and what was it?
I was 19 when I got my first tattoo. It's my friends name along my wrist.

What is your employment status/occupation and do your tattoos effect it?
I'm in full time employment and have two jobs. I work in a bar and a kitchen and I also work security as a door supervisor. I also do a lot of photography in my spare time aswell. I don't feel that my tattoos affect my work as only one is ever on show. Plus I think tattoos are becoming more and more acceptable.

What is your favorite piece? What is the story behind it?
I only have two tattoos and I love them both. One my best friend from school who passed away about two and a half years ago after several years of fighting cancer. and the other a picture of Elvis Presley on my ribs with some lyrics from my favourite song. I was brought up with Madness and Queen so im not sure when and how i became a little bit obsessed with Elvis but i find him fascinating and absolutely beautiful.

Do you have a favorite artist who you go back to or do you collect different artists work? Why?
Both my tattoos were done by different artists, I don't think the tattoo artist was particularly important for my tattoos as they're both pretty simple, but for my next tattoo i will be looking for a really unique artist rather than just a tattooist.

Have you faced any specific discrimination due to being tattooed?
haven't had any discrimination from having tattoos.

Do you plan on getting many more tattoos? If so will you stick to small/hidden pieces? Why?
I want to add to the piece on my ribs, not sure what but thinking about including some other people that i love and inspired by like Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and possibly my Nanna who passed away in September but she wasn't a fan of tattoos so its something to think about. The piece on my side, most people don't know I have but the one on my wrist is small but easily seen. I think that any tattoos i get in the near future will be easily hidden and easily displayed. I know some people can be intimidated by people that are covered in tattoos, they don't see the interesting art and the meanings behind peoples tattoos. As I want to be in a main stream of photography, working with children and kids and doing weddings, I think if I was covered in too many tattoos it wouldn't help my career.
