Inked & Awesome - The Dame

Name: The Dame
Age: 33

How old were you when you got your first tattoo and what was it?
Ummmm, I'm not sure, I got them done at the first ever London Tattoo Convention which I think was in 2004? So I would have been 25.

What is your employment status/occupation and do your tattoos effect it?
I am self employed and creator/writer of the-dame.com, my tattoos have the effect of making me relatable to my target readership of awesome badass chicks living outside of the status quo.

What is your favorite piece? What is the meaning behind it?
My favorite piece is the elephant and Buddhist prayer on my lower back.  The design came to me while I was volunteering in Thailand and so I had it drawn up and done by traditional bamboo tattoo on Ko Phi Phi.

Do you have a favorite artist who you go back to or do you collect different artists work? Why?
I have favorite artists, but I've never been to them, yet.  I am willing to wait to be able to afford an excellent artist.  I especially like Crispy Lennox, Ian Parkin, Emily Shoichet, Teniele Sadd, Amy Duncan and Kat Abdy.  Australia have a lot of really excellent tattooists!

Have you faced any specific discrimination due to being tattooed?
Luckily, no I haven't.  I come across people who don't get tattoos, but I think that's why its important to have really good work done to show people why its worth having.  Personally, I love art and so eventually I want to be able to take the art I love most with me everywhere I go.  When people ask me what about when I'm old and wrinkly, well I say, I will have beautiful art to look at instead of wrinkly old skin.

Any other comments?
I really want people to stop getting shitty tattoos, and I really want to cover my own shitty tattoos up! Something that can seem like a really good idea at the time, often isn't.  Get custom work done.  Have a single idea and let your chosen artist run with it.  That is why its so important to choose an artist who's work you are in love with.  That's also why I haven't yet had my stupid tattoos covered up yet, I'm waiting to be able to afford an artist I love so I can get custom work done.
