This is the story of two Golden Labrador Retrievers named Salty and Roselle which is guaranteed to make you shed a tear.
Everyone is aware of the tragedy that struck New York on September the 11th 2001. However, not everyone is aware that among the heroes of the events were two dogs.
When the attack struck there was a blind man named Omar Rivera, working at the PANYNJ in tower 1. Amongst the hectic panic, who came to his rescue but his (specially trained to be used to the New York subway and traffic) guide dog Salty! Refusing to leave his owners side even when a colleague stepped in and tried to take his lead, the heroic canine along with Omar's supervisor led them to safety.
Meanwhile, on the 78th floor of the same tower, guide dog Roselle was awoken from her nap under her owners desk by the commotion 15 floors above. Through the smoke, screams and general terror she led her owner Michael Hingson and 30 other people down 1,463 steps. After stopping to greet the firemen that passed them on their decent, Roselle continued to guide the party to the safety of a nearby subway station just as tower 2 crashed to the ground scattering debris everywhere.
It's awesome to know that not only the courageous people and services that attended the events of 9/11 , but the amazing creatures too, received awards. On March 5th 2002 both dogs received a joint Dickin Medal from the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, they also were awarded from the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Association a 'Partners in Courage' award and finally, the American Humane society dubbed Roselle 'American Dog Hero of the Year 2011'!
