Inked and Awesome - Chris Gibbany

Name: Chris Gibbany
Age: 40

How old were you when you got your first tattoo and what was it?
I was 30. My ex husband wouldn't allow me to have tattoos so after I divorced him and got with my current husband Gabe, I went and got a blue Chevy bowtie since I am such a Chevy nut.

Gabe already had a blue Chevy bowtie, and my 78 Z-28 is blue (which I've owned over 20 years) so it only made sense.  I love it as much now as I did back then.

What is your employment status/occupation and do your tattoos effect it?
I have worked at home/been self employed consecutively now since 2006.  Since I work at home and do "weird" things, like raise hedgehogs, extreme couponing, playing the "credit card game", help build Harleys, pinstripe, weld, etc, none of my tattoos have affected my work.   I have also had pink and purple hair for 7 years straight and I think my hair gets more attention than any tattoos.

What is your favorite piece? What is the meaning behind it?
Since all of my tattoos are motor related, they express my love for all things that make horsepower.  I would have to say that the sleeve I am working one will probably be my favorite (the lower piece has not healed yet).  I got the bowtie in honor of my blue 78, the 81 Corvette flags since it was the first Corvette I ever bought and I have had it over 13 years.  The piston and chain represent my love for motorcycles and my sleeve, so far is all about my 56 Harley Panhead.  I am going to try and incorporate my other Harleys as well- my 81 Ironhead and my 39 Knucklehead as well as a kicker since all but the 81 will be "kick only".

Do you have a favorite artist who you go back to or do you collect different artists work? Why?
My favorite artist and the only one I will ever use is Dessa Blackthorn, aka Sassy at Tattooz by Sassy in Mountain Home, Arkansas.  I had went to two different artists before hearing about Sassy and she has done all of my black and gray work and is the only person who does work on my body.  She is just EXCELLENT!  She is also a gearhead, fellow rider and drag racer and just an all around inspirational person.  She does awesome work.  I have won several tattoo contests with her pieces.  Why go elsewhere when you find a great artist.

Have you faced any specific discrimination due to being tattooed?
Since my tattoos are motor related and not  cupcakes, stars, hearts, etc, I do find that people who are not gearheads seem to think I have a strange taste in tattoos.  I'm sure people talk but what's new?  I dress like I want and that includes the artwork on my body.  I have things that mean the most to me close to me. What's better than that?

Any other comments.
I live a VERY frugal life as my husband and I make less than $25,000 a year (BEFORE bills and taxes) and we put everything we have  into our passions- old hot rods and vintage bikes! It CAN be done.
