How To - Keep Dogs Cool With Special Ice Lollys!

As promised to my Facebook page fans (You're not one? Why the heck not?! Get over there - so much funness!), today's post is a simple step by step of how to make ice treats especially for your canine companion.

It's extra important in weather like this to keep all pets and animals well hydrated and cool. But if your dog is as stubborn as Baker and his best friend Rex, it's easier said than done...
When my friend Laura (Rex's Mammy) sit in the garden we always have a big bowl of water in a shaded area for the pups as well as the backdoor open with another bowl inside should they want to go inside. These guys have other ideas though and would literally run and play until they dropped, which made me worry as a puppy Mama.

It was when they sat by me, puppy dog eyes and all, while I ate an ice pop that I thought of making them their own. Here's how it went.

Things you will need:
- Some sort of ice lolly mold.
- Water
- A knife to chop up treats.
- A variety of dog treats and fruit or veg.
(Always make sure the food is suitable for dogs to have.
Here are some great ones for your dog!)

Step 1:
Pretty self explanatory, but fill your mold with water.
Be sure not to fill right to the top as when your drop the treats in the water will be displaced.

Step 2:
Place your selected fruits, vegetables, dog treats or even toys depending on your mold, into the water.
I chose carrot, cucumber, a teeth cleaning chew and some frolic meat sweets - they remind me of polos.

Step 3:
Put them into your freezer and leave them overnight to fully harden!

Step 4:
Remove the ice tray/lolly mold from the freezer and rub around the sides to slightly warm,
so as to pop out the lolly easily. Alternatively pour hot water over the area for the same result.

And then let your little guys enjoy them in the sunshine :)
Let me know if you decide to make these and tweet me a photo of your pup enjoying it to @UnderToWonder!

You could also let them play in the paddling pool with you...

  1. That's a great idea! It's almost 100 degrees here in NYC and the dogs I see outside are all hot and moping.

  2. This is such a great idea! I have two dogs myself and they just don't stay out of the sun. Especially my Siberian Husky. He even lies in the sun as if he's sunbathing, and that for a husky!! We often joke about him being a "Barbados Husky" and not a Siberian Husky (because he likes the hot weather and prefers to curl up on the sofa when it's cold outside)

I'm definitely going to try this out next week! :)

  3. I saw this on pinterest a while ago, except it was a HUGE ice block with about 7 toys in and I thought my fridge wasn't big enough but I should totally have thought of doing little ice lollies!! What an awesome idea.

I want a paddling pool too! Rex would have so much fun!x
