Name: Emma Yoxall
Age: 31 still feel 21
Occupation: I work part time in a hospital the rest of the time I'm at home with my animals
Tell me about your very first tattoo.
My first tattoo was a full back piece to mark the end and the recovery from an eating disorder it was the first time that I felt comfortable in my own skin. It is a woodland scene with beautiful soul in vines and flowers written across my shoulders. I honestly thought with so many people having tattoos that it couldn't hurt that bad, I was so so wrong, I couldn't last more than an hour at the time ( my last sitting was 14 hours )
Do your tattoos (or any other style/body mod) effect your job, have they in the past?
People at work never notice my tattoos as they usually notice my nails first. I have been reported 4 times in the last month for the length of them. Apparently they are offensive, people who see me in the streets will stop me and tell me that they are disgusting and I should use my dole money for better things (I've never been on the dole, apparently people with long nails sit on their bum all day doing nothing)
What, if any, discrimination or bullying have you encountered due to being 'modified'?
I have one person tell me that my tattoos make me ugly other than that I have found that people, especially old ladies love my tattoos. When I was designing my tattoos I knew I wanted them super girly and pastel coloured, they came out so beautiful and just how I wanted. Old ladies love the colours and kids like making stories up about my shark.
Are your friends and family into body modification too? If not what do they think of yours?
My fiance is covered in tattoos but we are both the black sheep in our families. We are also the only ones with any tattoos or piercings. My dad hates my tattoos and tells me every time he sees me, secretly he loves that I'm my own person and that I had the courage to get them.
Tell us your favorite tattoo piece and talk us through it.
I love all my tattoos, they mean so much to me, I could never pick one. To me they are a visual diary of heartbreak, death, pain, marriage, divorce.
Which tattoo of yours has the most meaning or sentimental-ness behind it? Do you think all tattoos should have meaning?
All my tattoos come from a painful experience I have been through, I could never pick one all my tattoos are amazing and bring back memories. Absolutely not, you don't pick art for your walls based on meaning you buy it because it's beautiful to you.
Are you planning any more?
YES, I want my stomach and throat tattooed next. But I'm not going to lie, they sound painful.
In one sentence what would you tell someone who asked, 'Did it hurt?' ?
Hell yes! But beauty is pain and not having any sounds much worse.
Leave us with some words of wisdom regarding body modification.
At the end of the day the only opinions that matter come from the people that will be next to your death bed. At the end of your life you don't want to have missed out on what you love because someone you don't even remember talked you out of it. You are beautiful any way you decorate your temple.
